Best Time to Climb Mount Meru

The best months for trekking are June to October and January to March, when the weather is dry, visibility is excellent, and summit conditions are ideal. November remains climbable with occasional showers, while April and May experience heavy rainfall and slippery trails.

What to Expect on the Trek

Trek through wildlife-rich forests with a mandatory armed ranger, spend nights in comfortable mountain huts, and tackle an exciting midnight summit ascent along narrow volcanic ridges. Expect encounters with giraffes, buffaloes, monkeys, and breathtaking views of Meru Crater and Mount Kilimanjaro.

Preparation & Safety

Rising to 4,566 metres (14,980 ft), Mount Meru is Tanzania's second-highest mountain and one of East Africa's most rewarding trekking destinations. Located within Arusha National Park, Mount Meru offers spectacular scenery, abundant wildlife, dramatic volcanic landscapes, and breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro. Often used as an acclimatisation climb before Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru is also an incredible adventure in its own right.

Unlike Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru has one official trekking route—the Momella Route. Every climb is accompanied by an armed park ranger, allowing trekkers to safely pass through areas inhabited by giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, warthogs, monkeys, and numerous bird species before ascending into alpine moorland and along the spectacular crater rim to Socialist Peak.

Beginning at Momella Gate in Arusha National Park, the trail passes through lush rainforest, open grasslands, giant heather, and volcanic ridges before reaching Socialist Peak (4,566 m). The route is renowned for its incredible wildlife encounters, panoramic crater views, dramatic knife-edge ridges, and unforgettable sunrise over Mount Kilimanjaro.
